2025 Maine Bold Coast
Milky Way Photography Workshops

2025 Available Dates
September workshops will have about 2 hours each night where the Galactic Core of the Milky Way (the large bright photogenic part) will be above the horizon, and October workshops will have about 1 hour. But we will still be able to shoot the fainter part of the Milky Way further into the night (which is a great time for shooting it over the lighthouse). We will also shoot during blue hour before it gets completely dark, which can be a lot of fun with the Milky Way.
All workshops have a max capacity of 6 students.
REGISTRATION: Read EVERYTHING on this page first, you will find the reservation request form at the bottom of the page.
Description & Location
Join professional photographer Adam Woodworth along the Bold Coast of Maine in Lubec, a small fishing village which also happens to be the easternmost town in the US. With lighthouses, rugged ocean cliffs, dark night skies, bald eagles, seals, and whales, this is an amazing place to photograph!
This is a landscape photography workshop, with a focus on landscape astrophotography of the Milky Way as conditions permit. This is the coast of Maine after all and clear skies are not guaranteed, but these workshops are scheduled around the new moon cycle so that we have moonless dark skies at night. This area is also a great place for dramatic sunrises and sunsets.
We will also drive over the bridge to Campobello Island, part of Canada, for a sunset trip -- so bring your passport!
For more photos of this area go to my gallery and search for "Lubec" or "Campobello" in the search box in the upper right of that page.

Physical Requirements, Safety & Risks
This is an outdoor nature photo workshop and being in relatively good health is best for the activities we have planned. There will be some hiking involved. Usually we don't hike more than a mile through the woods as a group. There will be walking along a cobblestone beach with loose rocks at night. Please be prepared with proper clothing.
Please note that this workshop is in the dark and often along rocky and sometimes dangerous terrain. If you venture out onto rocks at the ocean's edge you acknowledge the risk you're taking. All participants are required to sign a risk of acknowledgement form at the start of the workshop. Adam Woodworth Photography, LLC, is not responsible for any injuries during this workshop.
Not Included
The price of the workshop does not include transportation, camera gear, or meals. You are responsible for all of these.
You must provide your own transportation, there is no bus to Lubec from the Bangor or Portland airports, and there is no shuttle around town during the workshop.
Required Equipment
In addition to your camera, lenses, batteries, etc, you must have the following:
- Sturdy tripod.
- Remote shutter release with timer and extra batteries, preferably one with a programmable timer. Or your camera may have an intervalometer and/or bulb timer built in, many newer cameras have this. If you're not sure then you can ask me in your application below.
- Lens warmer to keep your lens fog-free at night - I will have enough available to loan to everyone if you don't have your own. Something like thisMove Shoot Move lens heaterwith thisAnker batteryis what you want (with velcro, gaffer tape, or some pouch to attach the battery to your tripod). You can use any USB battery pack but this Anker one is small and light and will power the lens heater for 4-5 hours.
- Headlamp with a red LED mode. Your headlamp MUST have a red LED mode on it to limit the amount of light that will get into the shots of other workshop participants and to help preserve your night vision. One like thisBlack Diamond Cosmoworks very well.
- Laptop for editing your photos. To get the most out of the editing sessions (if available) you MUST have up to date versions of Lightroom Classic (or other professional raw editor) and Photoshop installed.
PLEASE NOTE: Lightroom is NOT THE SAME AS Lightroom Classic. - PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR LAPTOP IS MODERN! OLD COMPUTERS WILL NOT WORK!
- Warm clothing - it can get very cold on the seacoast at night. In September plan for it being in the 40s at night, and October it could get into the 30s. There is a lot of standing around in the cold so bring your warm stuff!
- Proper footwear - hiking boots recommended for some outings.
