Details

Nov 14 - 17 (3 nights, leave on the 17th)
Dec 12 - 15 (3 nights, leave on the 15th)

Tuition: $1450

Location: Lubec, Maine

Physical Fitness Required: Moderate hiking on rugged coastal trails, hills, and loose rock beaches.

All workshops are 3 nights with a max capacity of 6 students.

Join photographer Adam Woodworth along the Bold Coast of Maine in Lubec, a small fishing village which also happens to be the easternmost town in the US. With lighthouses, rugged ocean cliffs, dark night skies, bald eagles, seals, and whales, this is an amazing place to photograph!

We will also drive over the bridge to Campobello Island, part of Canada, for a sunset trip -- so bring your passport! If you don't have a passport you can get over to Campobello with a copy of your birth certificate and driver's license.

Be prepared for possibly very cold weather! While recent winters have been warmer here, it is still possible that it could be 10F or colder in December, just as easily as it could be 50F.

Milky Way Note: The Galactic Core of the Milky Way will NOT be fully visible this time of the year in Maine, but we will be able to get the fainter part of the Milky Way over the lighthouse similar to the photo at the top of this page.

This workshop is held in the tourism off-season, meaning there will be very few placess open to eat in Lubec. Water Street Tavern might be open for dinner Friday/Saturday, but Sunday we are on our own from the grocery store or with pizza, sandwiches, and similar items from the gas station in Lubec. Similar for breakfast, Narrow Escape Cafe might be open with breakfast sandwiches but otherwise there is the grocery store and gas station. Machias is about 35 minutes away with some restaurants open all year.

REGISTRATION: Read EVERYTHING on this page first, you will find the reservation request form at the bottom of the page.

Required Equipment

In addition to your camera, lenses, batteries, etc, you must have the following:

  • Sturdy tripod.
  • Remote shutter release with timer and extra batteries, preferably one with a programmable timer. Or your camera may have an intervalometer and/or bulb timer built in, many newer cameras have this. If you're not sure then you can ask me in your application below.
  • Lens warmer to keep your lens fog-free at night - I will have enough available to loan to everyone if you don't have your own. Something like thisMove Shoot Move lens heaterwith thisAnker batteryis what you want (with velcro, gaffer tape, or some pouch to attach the battery to your tripod). You can use any USB battery pack but this Anker one is small and light and will power the lens heater for 4-5 hours.
  • Headlamp with a red LED mode. Your headlamp MUST have a red LED mode on it to limit the amount of light that will get into the shots of other workshop participants and to help preserve your night vision. One like thisBlack Diamond Cosmoworks very well.
  • Laptop for editing your photos. To get the most out of the editing sessions (if we have them) you MUST have up to date versions of Lightroom Classic (or other professional raw editor) and Photoshop installed.
PLEASE NOTE: Lightroom is NOT THE SAME AS Lightroom Classic.
  • Winter clothing - It could be very cold!
  • Proper footwear - Hiking boots recommended for some outings.

If you’re considering one of Adam’s workshops, sign up! I thoroughly enjoyed the Bold Coast of Maine workshop and look forward to the opportunity to attend another. The shooting locations were incredibly beautiful and the class size promoted participation and exchanges of experiences and techniques. Adam’s expertise and teaching style are very effective, his enthusiasm for his work exemplary. I left feeling encouraged to continue my efforts in astrophotography.

I have attended many workshops and have had a variety of experiences. I will remember Adam’s as one of the best. He delivers instruction and guidance in an informative and encouraging manner. He has a demeanor, whether natural or cultivated, that serves him well and makes him an outstanding instructor and workshop leader. I enjoyed every aspect of the time spent at the workshop. Thank you, thank you!

I participated in my first Adam Woodworth workshop in 2016. I was wet behind the ears but learned a lot. Three years later, I returned for a second workshop, hopefully with some additional experience. It was thoroughly enjoyable and reinforced my strident belief that there are a number of photographers out there who provide astrophotography workshops, but there are not that many who truly know what they are doing and combine it with the passion of the night. Adam's workshop was awesome, and I look forward to joining him for a future workshop. If you are thinking about signing up for a workshop, don't delay, because that spot won't last long.

Adam's workshop was one of the best workshops I've participated in. The 1st night in the dark I was all thumbs and headlamp. But with Adam's guidance, the 2nd night I was confident with my camera settings and technique in the dark. Adam explains the process fully, is patient and very helpful with each participant in the workshop. Two thumbs up for anyone who wants to learn night sky photography.
Sharon Cummings
I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and learned a huge amount about my camera, astrophotography, and post processing. Adam is super knowledgable and patient with beginners as well as being able to go deep into the details with more experienced photographers. He’s willing to spend as much time as you need to answer all of your questions and provide you with the skills required to get amazing night time results. Highly recommended.

There are not enough good things to say about Adam and how hard he worked during our workshop. He went over and above to make everyone feel welcome and capable. Adam Woodworth is an excellent instructor. He knows his subject very well and proceeds with patience and enthusiasm. What a privilege it was to meet him and photograph at his iconic sites.

Adam’s workshop in beautiful Lubec, ME was perfect. The pace was relaxed and each session provided the opportunity to learn and take my skills and workflow to the next level. The live editing demonstrations provide me with a deeper understanding of the links between LR-Stacker-PS; and, we also learned the “why” of various methods of editing. I also have Adam’s video’s to help reinforce the workshop lessons! This was a great experience and I recommend both the workshop and video’s with confidence.
