Details

May 11-18, 2026 (7 nights, 8 days) -- Only 1 spot left!

Tuition: $2475 ($500 non-refundable deposit required)

Location: Newfoundland, Canada

Physical Fitness Required: Moderate hiking on rugged coastal trails, hills, and loose rock beaches.

Max capacity of 3 students.

Explore Newfoundland in a small RV or camper van — the best way to chase icebergs and capture the island's stunning landscapes, fishing shacks, and wildlife! Our schedule will be completely flexible so we can follow the icebergs wherever they appear and visit the best landscapes!

You must have (or rent) a small RV or camper van. No tents — we'll be camping in exposed, remote areas with high winds. Maximum length: 26 feet (contact me if yours is slightly longer).

RV Rental Options
  • From Halifax: Rent through CanaDream, drive to North Sydney, then take the 4-hour ferry to Newfoundland.
  • I recommend their deluxe camper van—compact, easy to park, with full bathroom and shower.
  • Minimum 9-day rental needed to include ferry round trip. You may want an additional day to get used to the camper.
  • I recommend buying the unlimited km package (50% off until Dec 31).
  • You MUST pay for the Northern Surcharge with CanaDream to drive the rented RV in Newfoundland. It is in the “Extras” page of the checkout process, under the “Extra Services” section.
  • Fly/Drive to Newfoundland: Rent locally from places like Newfoundland RV Rentals or RV Share.

If you are taking the ferry to Newfoundland, it leaves from North Sydney, Nova Scotia, and arrives in Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland. Marine Atlantic is the ferry operator. The ferry ride is about 6.5 or so hours depending on conditions. You need to arrive at the ferry terminal 2 hours prior to depature. The ferry sells out so I recommend booking soon, especially if you want a cabin.

Meeting location TBD, likely on the west coast (possibly Port-aux-Basques where the Nova Scotia ferry arrives).

Be prepared to drive extensively — some days just an hour, others up to 6 hours. We could easily cover 2000 miles or more in this workshop.

This trip is timed for peak iceberg season, and we'll head wherever the icebergs and weather take us. We'll likely spend time around the Great Northern Peninsula and Twillingate, both prime iceberg territory.

Possible Destinations
  • Gros Morne National Park
  • Great Northern Peninsula
  • L'Anse aux Meadows (Viking site)
  • Twillingate
  • Fogo Island
  • Bonavista
  • Puffins in Elliston (early season for puffins, not a super high priority)
  • Massive gannet colony in Cape St. Mary's
  • Point Amour Lighthouse in Labrador (overnight ferry trip)

If you have a drone this is a great trip for it, icebergs are amazing from a drone. Make sure to follow all Canadian drone laws.

This workshop coincides with the new moon and we may get opportunities for Milky Way photography, but remember we are very far north with long days and short nights.

Bring camera gear for everything from super wide angle landscapes and long telephoto icebergs and wildlife.

Bring clothing appropriate for weather from freezing to 80F.

This is perfect for adventurous photographers ready for spontaneity!

Why tour Newfoundland with me? I've been going to Newfoundland for 10 years and know the best spots for icebergs and amazing landscapes, and the best places to get snow crab or fish & chips!

Registration: Please read everything on this page and fill out the form at the bottom, I will then be in touch with you to confirm some things. If you need to rent an RV, I don't recommend booking your RV until we've had a chance to talk.

Due to Canadian labor laws I am not able to accept Canadian citizens on this workshop.
