Location: Newfoundland, Canada
Physical Fitness Required: Moderate hiking on rugged coastal trails, hills, and loose rock beaches.
Max capacity of 5 students.
Join me for a photography adventure in Newfoundland during peak iceberg season! We'll capture dramatic coastal landscapes, lighthouses, red fishing sheds, icebergs, and puffins.
Lodging, travel, and meals are not included. I will be happy to help you figure out lodging. See below for some lodging suggestions.
- May 25-28: Twillingate
- May 28-30: Fogo Island
- May 30-June 1: Bonavista
- May 25: Twillingate - 4pm meet & greet (location TBD), dinner, evening & sunset photography
- May 26-27: Twillingate area photography (icebergs, cliffs, fishing villages)
- May 28: Sunrise photos, drive to Farewell (1 hour), ferry to Fogo Island (included in price), sunset photos
- May 29: Fogo Island photography - icebergs and iconic red fishing stages
- May 30: Ferry back, 4-hour drive to Bonavista, sunset photos
- May 31: Bonavista area and puffin viewing in Elliston
- June 1: Sunrise shoot, workshop ends
You'll need to make the 4-hour drive from Farewell to Bonavista on May 30.
The workshop coincides with the full moon, offering opportunities to capture moonrise at sunset and moonset at sunrise - possibly over an iceberg! We'll photograph Fogo Island's abundant red fishing sheds and docks, and visit Elliston's puffin colony, accessible from land just a short drive from Bonavista.
We will be too early for "peak puffin" season, meaning there won't be babies or feedings and the fish won't be near shore yet, but there should still be lots of puffins visible on the small island near the viewing site, and a chance for close-ups with puffins that land on the viewing site.
If you have a drone this is a great trip for it, icebergs are amazing from a drone. Make sure to follow all Canadian drone laws.
Bring camera gear for everything from super wide angle landscapes and long telephoto icebergs and wildlife.
Bring clothing appropriate for weather from freezing to 80F.
Why tour Newfoundland with me? I've been going to Newfoundland for 10 years and know the best spots for icebergs and amazing landscapes, and the best places to get snow crab or fish & chips!
Registration: Please read everything on this page and fill out the form at the bottom, I will then be in touch with you to confirm some things.
Obviously I can't guarantee there will be icebegs, but May is usually peak iceberg season. However it is the winds and pack ice that decide where the icebergs end up!
Due to Canadian labor laws I am not able to accept Canadian citizens on this workshop.

Lodging
Lodging is not included. There are inns and B&Bs, and there are a lot of small cottages on Airbnb for very reasonable rates. Many of these are on the water or have water views and have been recently renovated. Personally, a small "all to yourself" cottage/cabin through Airbnb/VRBO would be my preference (I will be staying in my RV).
Here are recommended areas to look for lodging for our different destinations:
- Twillingate: Book in Twillingate, Crow Head, or Durrell (all parts of Twillingate)
- Fogo Island: Book in Joe Batt's Arm or Tilting, but anywhere on Fogo Island will work.
- Bonavista: Book in Bonavista, Elliston, or Maberly.
Let me know if you need help!
Driving & Ferry
You might want to consider driving to Newfoundland, it will allow you to bring all your camera gear. You will take the ferry from North Syndey, Nova Scotia and arrive in Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland. Marine Atlantic is the ferry operator. The ferry ride is about 6.5 or so hours depending on conditions. You need to arrive at the ferry terminal 2 hours prior to depature. The ferry sells out so I recommend booking soon, especially if you want a cabin.
Airports & Rental Cars
- Gander (YQX): 90 minute drive to Twillingate, almost 3 hour drive from Bonavista
- St. John's (YYT): 5 hour drive to Twillingate, 3.5 hour drive from Bonavista
- Deer Lake (YDF): 4 hour drive to Twillingate, 6 hour drive from Bonavista
You will want to book you rental car ASAP, they sell out during iceberg season.
